What it is
The most common attack drone Russia uses against Ukrainian cities. The design is Iranian, but Russia now builds it itself, in the Alabuga special economic zone, under the name “Geran-2”. In a dismantled example, HUR found an Iranian MD550 engine made by MADO.
It flies a preset route using satellite navigation and explodes together with its warhead. According to Defense Express, the warhead on upgraded drones was increased to 90 kg by relocating some of the electronics and fuel tanks.
How to recognise it
A loud piston-engine buzz that sounds like a moped, which is where the name spotters use most often comes from. It flies low and slowly compared with missiles, so it can be followed from district to district, and that is exactly how it appears on our map.

What to do
- 1When you hear the “Air raid alert!” signal, go to the nearest shelter at once. Find out in advance where it is near your home and work.
- 2If you cannot reach a shelter, move to a room without windows and follow the “two walls” rule.
- 3Agree with your family on what to do and where to meet if the phone network or the power goes down.
A marker on our map may appear late or not at all. Go by the siren, not by the map.
