Geran-3 — the jet-powered Shahed

Geran-3: Russia's jet-powered Shahed with a Chinese turbojet engine. How far and how fast it flies, and why it is more dangerous than the usual Geran-2.

What it is

A Russian counterpart of Iran's jet-powered Shahed-238: a Shahed airframe, but instead of a piston engine it has a Chinese Telefly JT80 turbojet, which HUR found in a dismantled example.

The figures for it vary noticeably. When production began, HUR reported 550–600 km/h and 2,500 km. A later Defense Express analysis gives more modest numbers: from 300 km/h, up to 370 km/h in a dash before the attack or inside an air-defence zone, and a range of up to 1,000 km. That is still 1.6 times faster than the propeller-driven Shahed.

What it means for you

It covers 5–6 km a minute, so the marker on the map is always behind it. If you hear about a jet-powered target heading your way, go to a shelter at once.

What to do

  1. 1When you hear the “Air raid alert!” signal, go to the nearest shelter at once. Find out in advance where it is near your home and work.
  2. 2If you cannot reach a shelter, move to a room without windows and follow the “two walls” rule.
  3. 3Agree with your family on what to do and where to meet if the phone network or the power goes down.

A marker on our map may appear late or not at all. Go by the siren, not by the map.

Marker lives

6–8 min

  • The marker turns nose-first along the course as soon as spotters report the direction of travel.
  • If there are no new reports about the target, the marker closes after 6–8 min.
